The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a stern warning to the public against the illegal practice of tampering with electricity meters, emphasizing that it is a serious offense punishable under the law. In a recent post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Commission reminded citizens of the critical role they play in safeguarding the integrity of the electricity supply system.
“Did you know that tampering with a meter is an electricity offense?” NERC stated. “If you notice someone tampering with any electricity meter, report it immediately to your DisCo!”
NERC urged consumers to report any suspicious activity involving electricity meters directly to their respective Distribution Companies (DisCos) through the Customer Complaints Unit (CCU). By doing so, citizens can help curb electricity theft, ensure accurate billing, and maintain the integrity of the power supply network.
The Commission’s call to action highlights the importance of community participation in tackling electricity theft, which not only disrupts service delivery but also leads to inflated electricity bills for honest consumers. NERC’s appeal is part of its broader effort to promote consumer protection and electricity safety across the nation.
“Our quick action can prevent electricity theft and ensure fair billing for everyone,” the Commission added, encouraging all Nigerians to be proactive and vigilant in reporting such unlawful activities.
The NERC’s initiative is a timely reminder for all electricity consumers to remain vigilant and report any form of meter tampering or illegal connections to their local DisCos. This collaboration between the regulatory body and the public is essential in creating a more efficient and reliable electricity sector for Nigeria.
