In a resolute move to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming Edo State elections, the Nigeria Police Force has successfully arrested two notorious political thugs in an overnight raid. This decisive action underscores the police’s unwavering commitment to eradicating electoral violence and ensuring a peaceful democratic process.

According to an official statement released on the Nigeria Police Force’s X handle, the two suspects, identified as 43-year-old Edwin Obanor and 41-year-old Audu Tajudeen, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from Ugbogbo Quarters in Igara Akoko, Edo, were apprehended in a meticulously planned operation. Acting on credible intelligence that armed individuals were poised to disrupt the election, the police swung into action.
Obanor, known to be the leader of a violent group, was arrested at Oredo Ward 4 around 9 p.m. on the eve of the election, while Tajudeen was apprehended in Igara Akoko, both in possession of illegal firearms. A search of their belongings revealed three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols on Obanor, while a locally made gun was recovered from Tajudeen.

The arrests are not only a victory for law enforcement but also a powerful message to those intending to incite chaos during the elections. The Nigeria Police Force has vowed to crack down on illegal arms bearers and troublemakers, emphasizing that anyone found disrupting the electoral process will face the full weight of the law.
In his statement, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, reaffirmed the police’s resolve to maintain peace, protect lives and property, and ensure a secure election environment. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, assuring citizens that the police, alongside other security agencies, are fully prepared to neutralize any threats to public order.
The two suspects remain in police custody, awaiting formal charges, as investigations continue. The Nigeria Police Force reiterated that there will be zero tolerance for violence or illegal activities during the election and that offenders will be dealt with swiftly.
