In a swift and decisive move, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered the immediate closure of the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri, Borno State. This action follows the devastating floods that recently submerged the market, resulting in widespread contamination of pharmaceuticals.
Taking to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, NAFDAC announced that the contaminated drugs, which had been exposed to floodwaters, were irresponsibly sun-dried by vendors and prepared for resale. This dangerous practice has raised significant public health concerns, prompting swift intervention by the regulatory body.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, personally directed the market’s closure, ensuring a comprehensive shop-to-shop inspection and removal of all compromised drugs. The aim is to protect public health by preventing the distribution of contaminated products that could endanger lives.
In her statement, Prof. Adeyeye emphasized the agency’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of Nigerians, declaring zero tolerance for any attempt to reintroduce tainted pharmaceuticals into circulation. “We will not rest until every compromised drug is removed from the market,” she said, adding that NAFDAC will prosecute any individuals found guilty of violating public health standards.
The closure of the Gomboru drug market underscores NAFDAC’s vigilance in maintaining drug safety standards and protecting the lives of citizens in the aftermath of environmental disasters.
The agency has also called on the public to be vigilant, urging them to report any suspicious drug sales or activities in the region. NAFDAC reassured Nigerians that it is committed to preventing any harm that could arise from the sale of contaminated products.
