EFCC Nabs 29 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Abuja, Seizes 32 Phones

In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the arrest of 29 suspected internet fraudsters in Abuja. The announcement was made through the agency’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

The operatives of the EFCC’s Abuja Zonal Directorate carried out the arrests during coordinated raids across several locations in Gwagwalada, a bustling district in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The operation was triggered by credible intelligence reports linking the suspects to internet fraud activities.

In the course of the operation, the EFCC recovered 32 mobile phones of various makes and models, believed to have been used in the commission of the alleged crimes. These devices are currently being examined by forensic experts to gather evidence for prosecution.

A spokesperson for the EFCC revealed that the arrests form part of the commission’s intensified efforts to rid the country of cybercriminals, particularly in major urban centers like Abuja. “The EFCC remains committed to rooting out internet fraudsters who tarnish Nigeria’s global reputation and exploit innocent people through online scams,” the spokesperson said.

The arrested suspects are currently being held for interrogation and further investigation. According to the EFCC, they will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded and all necessary evidence has been compiled.

This latest operation highlights the EFCC’s relentless pursuit of fraudsters as the agency continues to ramp up efforts to combat the rising tide of cybercrime across Nigeria.

The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the EFCC, as the agency reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s financial integrity.

This marks yet another victory in the ongoing war against financial crimes, showcasing the EFCC’s determination to bring perpetrators of internet fraud to justice.
