In a bold move to reshape military strategy, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has emphasized the integration of digital technology into Nigerian Army (NA) operations as a critical tool for boosting military effectiveness. This forward-looking vision was unveiled during his opening address at the high-profile seminar on Digital Transformation and the Smart Soldier Concept, held on September 12, 2024, at the Headquarters 3 Division, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos.

The seminar marked a significant step in the NA’s ongoing commitment to modernization, highlighting the urgent need to leverage cutting-edge technology in military operations. General Lagbaja explained that digital tools are pivotal for refining decision-making processes and adapting to the ever-evolving security landscape.
In his address, General Lagbaja detailed the concept of the “smart soldier”—a force member empowered by enhanced situational awareness, real-time information sharing, and sophisticated communication systems. However, he noted that true transformation extends beyond just acquiring new technologies; it involves fostering a culture of innovation, adaptability, and continuous improvement within the ranks.
Represented by Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN, the COAS highlighted how this seminar is directly aligned with his command philosophy: “To transform the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force, capable of fulfilling our constitutional duties in a joint environment.”
While commending the troops for their relentless dedication to combatting insecurity in Plateau State and beyond, General Lagbaja reaffirmed his commitment to improving troop welfare, underscoring the necessity of embracing digital transformation to ensure Nigeria’s military remains at the cutting edge of national security.
The seminar’s importance was further highlighted in a welcome address by Major General Zakari Abubakar, Chief of Transformation and Innovation at the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation. He described the event as a key initiative designed to raise awareness about the practical integration of digital technologies into NA operations. According to Major General Abubakar, this transformation extends to exploring the benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics to drive smarter, more efficient military responses.
Deputy Chief of Transformation and Innovation, Major General Adewale Adetoba, also emphasized the seminar’s focus on strengthening the decision-making and resource management skills of junior and mid-level officers. As military environments grow increasingly complex, the ability to leverage digital solutions becomes critical to operational success.
Three guest speakers—Major General AA Ayannuga, Major General BA Alabi, and Mr. Egwa Godwin—offered in-depth perspectives on digital transformation, warrior ethos, and the role of drug abuse in undermining operational effectiveness. Their lectures underscored the importance of not only mastering new technologies but also maintaining the core values and professional standards that define a true warrior in the field.
Together, the speakers highlighted that the Nigerian Army’s core mission remains the protection and defense of the state against any and all threats. Yet, in this new age of warfare, digital integration, professional competence, and a commitment to core values such as discipline and resilience are what will ultimately strengthen the modern “smart soldier” and advance the Nigerian Army’s mission of safeguarding national security.
General Lagbaja’s push for digital transformation stands as a clear message: the Nigerian Army is ready to embrace the future, and its troops are set to become smarter, more agile, and more effective than ever before.
