President Tinubu Pledges Urgent Federal Support as Maiduguri Faces Devastating Floods

In a heartfelt response to the catastrophic flooding that has ravaged parts of Maiduguri, Borno State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep concern for the victims and pledged swift federal intervention. In an official State House Press Release, shared by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on his official X handle, Tinubu conveyed his sympathy to the displaced residents and vowed immediate action.

The flood, described as the worst in Maiduguri’s recent history, has wreaked havoc across the state capital, displacing thousands and severely damaging key infrastructure, including the Maiduguri Post Office and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, the disaster has plunged many families into hardship, with livelihoods lost in the deluge.

President Tinubu extended his deepest condolences to the people of Borno, particularly to the families who have lost everything in the flood’s wake. He reassured the state’s governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, of the Federal Government’s full support in managing the crisis, emphasizing the need for urgent humanitarian assistance.

“While relevant authorities continue assessing the damage, I have directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate aid to flood victims. We are committed to mobilizing all necessary federal resources to ensure relief reaches those in need as quickly as possible,” the President declared.

As evacuation efforts continue in affected areas, Tinubu stressed the importance of a coordinated response between state and federal agencies, promising to remain personally involvedin overseeing the recovery process.

This disaster is a stark reminder of the growing threat of climate-related events in Nigeria, and President Tinubu’s prompt response demonstrates his administration’s commitment to addressing such emergencies head-on. The people of Maiduguri now look to both state and federal authorities for the swift relief and recovery efforts that will help them rebuild their lives.
