Nigerian Army Concludes Groundbreaking Social Media Seminar to Empower Youths in National Security

In a significant step towards bridging the gap between security forces and the younger generation, the Nigerian Army’s Department of Civil-Military Affairs has successfully concluded its 36th Social Media Seminar, aimed at harnessing the power of social media for national security and development. The event, which took place at Paragon Sports and Event Centre, Gidan Dawa, Katsina, on September 5th, 2024, was a pivotal gathering of military leaders, security agencies, youth participants, and expert resource persons, all focused on empowering Nigerian youth to play a proactive role in safeguarding the nation.

With the theme “Harnessing Social Media for National Security and Development”, the seminar aimed to educate and inspire young Nigerians to use social media platforms responsibly, aligning their online activities with national security interests. The Special Guest of Honour, Major General Lukman Omoniyi, emphasized the critical role youth play in this digital age, warning against the dissemination of harmful or deceptive content that could destabilize the country. He passionately urged participants to harness the positive aspects of social media, turning these platforms into tools that support theNigerian Army’s non-kinetic operations and foster greater community inclusion.

“Social media has tremendous potential to unite communities and enhance national security when used correctly,” General Omoniyi remarked. “However, when misused, the consequences are severe, destabilizing the nation’s social fabric. We encourage our youths to be vigilant and responsible online, using these platforms to support our collective efforts in safeguarding Nigeria.”

The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Nosakhare Ugbo, echoed these sentiments in his welcome address, further stressing the seminar’s importance in today’s volatile security environment. He acknowledged the increasing influence of social media in shaping public perceptions and its potential to serve as a powerful tool for combating fake news, which poses a significant threat to national security. General Ugbo also expressed profound gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, whose unwavering support was instrumental in the seminar’s success.

“We are grateful for the continued backing from the Nigerian Army’s leadership,” General Ugbo noted. “This seminar aims to transform how young Nigerians engage with social media, ensuring they understand the weight of their digital footprints in the context of national security.”

The seminar featured insightful lectures from renowned resource persons, including Dr. Ehiz Odigie and Dr. Ibrahim Hamza, who enlightened the audience on leveraging social media for enhanced national development and understanding its critical role in promoting national security.
