Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has voiced his deep concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, accusing the Federal Government of neglecting its primary responsibility of protecting citizens. In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Wazirin Adamawa expressed profound dismay at the recent bloodshed in Yobe State, which claimed numerous lives, as well as the widespread devastation plaguing villages across Katsina, Sokoto, and other parts of the North-West and North-Central regions.
Atiku lambasted the government for being indifferent, stating that while the country burns under the weight of insurgencies and violence, those in power seem more preoccupied with trivial matters. “Despite the tragic bloodshed in Yobe and the rampant destruction across villages in Katsina, Sokoto, and other towns, the government remains detached, engrossed in inconsequential affairs,” he stated.
He further lamented the situation in the South, where the nation continues to grapple with the unrest sown by Boko Haram insurgents and the ripple effects of political discord, creating an increasingly volatile atmosphere.
Atiku’s condemnation extended to the government’s harsh crackdown on dissent, highlighting its use of extreme measures, such as death sentences on protesters, which he described as “draconian.” He pointed out that these tactics do nothing but silence the cries for justice while ignoring the root causes of insecurity and lawlessness in the country.
“The atrocity in Yobe is a stark testament to the failure of the current security framework,” Atiku declared, emphasizing the need for immediate and comprehensive reform. He called on the Tinubu administration to step up its efforts in safeguarding life and property, stressing that the country cannot continue to spiral into chaos while its leaders remain oblivious to the plight of the common people.
“My heart goes out to the victims of these horrific attacks,” Atiku concluded, urging the government to urgently prioritize the safety of all Nigerians.
