Omoyele Sowore, the founder of Sahara Reporters and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has unleashed a scathing critique against the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as his retirement looms. Taking to his official X handle, Sowore claimed that the current crackdown on #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria activists and protesters, now facing treason charges, is a desperate attempt by Egbetokun to extend his tenure by another four years.

Sowore didn’t mince words, stating, “Nigerians must remember that #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria activists and protesters are charged with TREASON today because the IG of @PoliceNG, Kayode Egbetokun, wants his tenure extended by four years. He is due for a disgraceful retirement tomorrow, September 4th, 2024.”
In a damning revelation, Sowore accused Egbetokun of ordering the brutal suppression of protests across Nigeria, particularly targeting the northern regions. “Just in August alone, he ordered the murder of over 40 protesters, mainly in the northern parts of Nigeria. He also arrested and detained over 2,000 protesters and ensured they were summarily tried and imprisoned indefinitely,” Sowore alleged, painting a grim picture of the state’s heavy-handed response to dissent.
Sowore further claimed that these actions are part of a larger scheme to curry favor with Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, whom he described as the nation’s “maximum dictator.” “Mr. Egbetokun is doing all these to please his principal, Nigeria’s maximum dictator, Bola Tinubu,” Sowore asserted, linking the police chief’s actions to the administration’s broader strategy to silence opposition.
In his post, Sowore also reignited the calls for accountability and change, using hashtags such as #EgbetokunMustGo, #TinubuMustGo, #FearlessINOctober, and #RevolutionNow, rallying support for what he describes as a necessary revolution against the current regime.
As the September 4th deadline approaches, all eyes are on the unfolding political drama surrounding Egbetokun’s retirement, with Sowore’s fiery accusations adding fuel to an already volatile situation. The narrative of power, control, and resistance continues to unfold, with the Nigerian public anxiously watching to see how the government and security apparatus will respond to these growing tensions.
