“COAS Commissions Key Civil-Military Cooperation Projects in Abia State: A New Dawn for Ekeoba-Oriedu”

In a significant move that underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to fostering strong community ties, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, officially commissioned several Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) projects on August 30, 2024, in Ekeoba-Oriedu, Umuahia North, Abia State. These projects are set to transform the local community, offering vital infrastructure and services that will have a lasting impact.

The commissioned projects include a state-of-the-art Cottage Hospital, a Borehole Water Plant, the installation of a 500KVA Transformer, and a Community Multi-Purpose Hall—all strategically placed within the Ekeoba-Oriedu Autonomous Community of Umuahia North LGA. These initiatives not only address critical needs but also symbolize the Nigerian Army’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians through non-kinetic means of engagement.

Lieutenant General Lagbaja emphasized the importance of these projects, urging the people of Ekeoba-Oriedu to fully utilize the opportunities brought to their doorstep by one of their own. He clarified that the Army’s efforts are not in competition with governmental agencies but are aimed at winning the hearts and minds of Nigerians, thereby contributing to the Army’s broader mission of managing the nation’s security and socio-economic challenges.

These transformative projects were the brainchild of Major General Obinna Ajunwa, the Director General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Center, and an illustrious son of Ekeoba-Oriedu. In his welcome address, Major General Ajunwa highlighted the long-standing and robust relationship between the Nigerian Army and the people of Abia State, a bond that has only strengthened over the years.

The event was further elevated by the presence of the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, represented by the Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu. Governor Otti lauded the Nigerian Army for its unwavering support and commitment to improving the lives of Abians through these special intervention projects. He noted that these initiatives exemplify the Army’s dedication to making a tangible difference in the communities they serve.

The commissioning ceremony was a grand affair, attended by a host of dignitaries, including former COAS Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd), the Commander Corps of Artillery, and Principal Staff Officers from Army Headquarters. Also in attendance were the Commander of the 14 Brigade, the Commandant of the Nigerian Navy College of Accounts and Finance, Senator Austin Akobundu, Honourable Obinna Aguicha, and numerous senior military officers, both serving and retired, alongside Abia State government officials.

The cultural richness of the occasion was highlighted by the traditional breaking of kola nuts by His Royal Majesty, Eze Philip Ajumiwe Ndo 1 of Oriendu Autonomous Community, symbolizing peace and a warm welcome in Igbo culture. The event also featured the unveiling of the four commissioned projects, a guided tour of the facilities, the presentation of souvenirs, and a series of group photographs, capturing the spirit of unity and collaboration that marked the day.

With these projects now in place, the people of Ekeoba-Oriedu stand to benefit immensely, and the Nigerian Army has once again demonstrated its resolve to be more than just a military force, but a key partner in the nation’s development.
