In a move that has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community, the Zamfara State Police Command has called for an exhaustive investigation into the tragic and senseless killing of Superintendent of Police (SP) Halliru Liman, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Wusagu Division, Kebbi State. The DPO was brutally shot dead by a soldier at a checkpoint in Zamfara, raising serious concerns about inter-agency cooperation and the rule of law.
Renowned security analyst and counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama took to his official X handle to announce the distressing news, amplifying calls for justice. According to ASP Yazid Abubakar, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Zamfara State Police Command, the incident occurred on August 28, 2024, at approximately 10:30 AM. SP Liman was en route to attend a monthly conference in Birnin Kebbi when he was stopped by military personnel from Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) Sector 6 in the Dan Marke area of Bukkuyum, Zamfara State.
Despite clearly identifying himself as a police officer, SP Liman was subjected to a horrifying act of violence. In an unprovoked and shocking display of aggression, the soldier, identified as Hassan, pointed his weapon at the DPO and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
The Zamfara State Police Command has condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms, describing it as a blatant violation of the rules of engagement and the principles that should govern inter-agency relations. “The circumstances surrounding this heinous crime are alarming and unacceptable,” ASP Abubakar stated. “We demand a thorough investigation to uncover the truth and ensure those responsible are held accountable.”
The police have urged relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action, stressing that such incidents undermine public trust and the vital cooperation between the police and military. “The police and military must work together to maintain peace and security, not engage in violent confrontations that erode the public’s confidence in our institutions,” ASP Abubakar added.
As the investigation unfolds, the Zamfara State Police Command has extended its deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of SP Halliru Liman, assuring them that every effort will be made to ensure justice is served. The call for accountability echoes across the nation, as many watch closely to see how this tragic and deeply troubling incident will be resolved.
