Nigerian Army Fortified with Advanced Combat Enablers, Reaffirms Commitment to Apolitical Stance and Human Rights – COAS Lt. Gen. Lagbaja

The Nigerian Army has unveiled a series of strategic advancements aimed at enhancing its operational effectiveness across the country. In a recent announcement via its official X handle (formerly Twitter), the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, emphasized the Army’s commitment to bolstering its capabilities with newly acquired combat enablers while steadfastly maintaining its apolitical stance and respect for human rights.

Speaking at the Chief of Army Staff Combined Second and Third Quarters Conference 2024, held on Wednesday, 28 August 2024, at the Council of Chiefs Hall in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, General Lagbaja highlighted the acquisition of critical combat enablers such as Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, advanced rifles, and ammunition. He noted that these assets have already begun to significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of troops across various theaters of operation, directly contributing to the Army’s efforts in combating security challenges nationwide.

“These acquisitions,” General Lagbaja stated, “will undoubtedly elevate the effectiveness of our troops across the nation, solidifying our trajectory toward a more secure environment that will drive economic prosperity for Nigeria.”

The COAS also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to building a well-equipped and professional Nigerian Army. He pointed to the recent procurement of 2 BELL UH-1 Huey Helicopters, which are pivotal for a range of missions including logistics and medical evacuations. General Lagbaja disclosed that Nigerian Army pilots are currently undergoing specialized training on these platforms, which were received on 20 June 2024, and will soon be fully integrated into operational theaters, albeit initially for logistics missions.

In his remarks, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umoh Eno, who formally declared the conference open, praised the ongoing restructuring efforts within the Nigerian Army. He urged the Army to maintain its forward momentum while emphasizing the importance of remaining apolitical and upholding fundamental human rights in all operations. Governor Eno further underscored the critical role of actionable intelligence and inter-agency synergy in achieving operational success.

“The Nigerian Army,” Governor Eno stated, “is not just a pillar of national security, but also a key element of our national power and diplomatic influence.” He commended General Lagbaja for his exemplary leadership and urged the Army to develop strategies that would build upon its current achievements.

A highlight of the conference was the presentation of Nigerian Army Group Life Assurance cheques to beneficiaries, fulfilling one of the key pillars of the COAS’ Command Philosophy—promoting sound administration through the provision of adequate welfare for personnel and their families.

Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, concluded the event with remarks, further solidifying the Army’s dedication to both operational excellence and the well-being of its personnel.
