Tragedy Strikes Maiduguri: IED Explosion Kills 1, Injures 11 Amid Protests

In a tragic turn of events, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion in Maiduguri has resulted in the death of one individual and left eleven others with varying degrees of injuries. This harrowing incident occurred during a protest against bad governance at Deribe Junction near the Federal Government Girls’ College Monguno (FGGC) Annex Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri.

Renowned security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, who shared the news on his official social media X formerly Twitter channel, highlighted the severity of the situation as disclosed by Borno Police Commissioner, Yusuf Lawal.

Details of the Incident

Providing a detailed situation report on Friday, Commissioner Lawal confirmed that the injured victims were immediately transported to the State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri for urgent medical attention, while the deceased’s body was sent for an autopsy. Lawal also noted the swift response of the police, deploying the Explosive Ordnance Device (EOD) team from Base 13 to secure the area around a nearby filling station.

In a separate, equally disturbing incident, a case of culpable homicide was reported in Biu local government area. According to Commissioner Lawal, one Muhammad Wakshama reported that his son-in-law, Ibrahim Bulama, had a fatal altercation with his wife, Maryam Ibrahim. Bulama allegedly struck Maryam on the head with a stick, causing severe injuries that led to her death at the General Hospital Biu.

Lawal confirmed that the suspect, Ibrahim Bulama, has been arrested, and an exhibit related to the crime was recovered. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.

The Toll of Recent Violence

These tragic events have contributed to a grim tally of 17 deaths in Borno State within the past 48 hours, with numerous others injured. Commissioner Lawal assured the public that the Borno Police Command is conducting thorough investigations and that efforts to restore normalcy are well underway.
