Hunger Protest Takes New Twist In Adamawa. From Stanley Mijah, Yola.

The Nation-wide hunger Protest which commenced on August 1 has taken a dramatic turn in Yola, the Adamawa State capital as two major groups, for and against the protest have emerged during the widespread protest.
While one of the groups was protesting against bad governance and the crippling hunger situation in the country, the opposing group was canvassing for support for the Bola Tinubu led administration due to what the group described as the national stability created by the present administration through its local government autonomy policy.
The groups who flooded the streets shouting slogans and displaying placards with inscriptions, “we are with peace with Tinubu government”, “thanks for local government autonomy”, ” stop hunger and bad governance” respectively, were peaceful in their demonstration.
The Protesters were also seen being guided and protected by security operatives who are heavily armed and positioned at strategic points of the city to ward off criminals who might want to hijack the peaceful protest to perpetrate evil.
The police who seemed impressed with the conduct of the Protesters were seen accompanying them and distributing water packs to the Protesters as a mark of friendship and appreciation.
Some of the Protesters who spoke to the Pioneer on the condition of anonymity said that the protest was justifiable owing to the nation’s economic woes and human suffering.
According to them some of the sectarian interests expressed in the wake of the protest were not only funny but detrimental to national growth.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Adamawa State command, SP Suleiman Yahya Nguroje told Journalists that the command has put in place measures to curtail any act of violence that may erupt before, during and after the planned hunger protest.
He said the police command under the leadership of CP Dan-Kwambo Morris has vowed that no stone will be left unturned to ensure that the planned protest did not turn to looting of government and individual property.
He said the command will not stop the protesters to expressed their grievances but they should do so within the ambit of law.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri on the other hand has commended the Residents for their maturity and understanding in the wake of the protest.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humashi Wonosikou, the governor appealed for calm as the federal government had sought to address the grievances of protesting Nigerians.
Fintiri attributed the Residents’ restraints to their faith in his administration’s efforts to improve their lives.
Our Correspondent reports that the hunger protest in the state was generally peaceful.
