“Democracy Has Led Nigeria to a Dilapidated State: IBB’s Stark Assessment”

Former military head of state, Rtd General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has stirred significant debate with his recent statements on social media. In a post on his official X handle, formerly known as Twitter, Babangida lamented the current state of Nigeria under democratic governance. He argued that some of Nigeria’s best years were during military rule, highlighting achievements such as job creation, enhanced security, affordable living costs, and improved infrastructure and education.

Babangida’s critique of the democratic system pointed to its failure to sustain the progress made during military rule. “Assessing the democratic system of government over the years, we see that it has taken us back to a much worse, dilapidated state,” he wrote. He emphasized the prevailing issues of incessant insecurity, economic hardship, election rigging, widespread poverty, and the harsh living conditions faced by many Nigerians as evidence of this decline.

Reflecting on the current socio-economic challenges, Babangida’s assessment paints a grim picture of Nigeria’s trajectory under democratic governance. His comments have sparked discussions on the effectiveness of Nigeria’s political systems and the need for significant reforms to address the nation’s pressing issues.
