In a landmark move, President Bola Tinubu has officially signed the National Minimum Wage Amendment Bill 2024 into law, setting a new benchmark for workers’ welfare across Nigeria. This significant legislation, which mandates a minimum wage of N70,000, is subject to review every three years to ensure it remains aligned with economic realities and the needs of the workforce.
The signing ceremony took place at the State House in Abuja on Monday, just days after the National Assembly passed the bill with unprecedented speed. President Tinubu signed the bill during a Federal Executive Council meeting, underscoring the administration’s commitment to improving the livelihood of Nigerian workers.
“Today marks a new dawn for our workforce. This new law will undoubtedly reassure our workers that their welfare is of paramount importance,” stated the Head of Service, adding that this move exemplifies the President’s dedication to the nation’s workforce.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, along with other National Assembly leaders, attended the ceremony, reflecting the collaborative effort between the government and legislative bodies. President Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the National Assembly for its swift action in passing the bill, highlighting the unity and shared purpose in addressing the welfare of Nigerian workers.
This historic amendment, resulting from extensive negotiations among the government, private sector, and organized labour, symbolizes a significant victory for workers and a testament to the administration’s proactive approach to governance.
