A heart-wrenching video has surfaced, depicting the harrowing reality faced by a teenage boy from the Barnawa community in Kaduna State. Forced into extreme poverty, this boy, estimated to be between 12 and 16 years old, gathers grass meant for livestock to feed his family.
In the video, the boy is seen carrying a sack of grass from a farm. He narrates, in Hausa, how his family has been driven to consume grass due to unbearable hardship, providing a stark glimpse into the dire circumstances they endure.
“We prepare the grass with Maggi (seasoning cube) and groundnut cake (Kulikuli),” he explains. “It can be eaten alone or with these ingredients.” His testimony underscores the extreme measures his family has taken, as they can no longer afford staple meals like spaghetti or rice.
In a poignant plea, the boy calls on the government to intervene: “We need palliative measures to help us and others survive Nigeria’s harsh economy.”
His words highlight the devastating impact of poverty on vulnerable families, emphasizing the urgent need for support and intervention to alleviate their suffering.
