Crisis in the Skies: NSIB Probes Max Air Emergency in Yola

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an in-depth investigation into a harrowing incident involving a Max Air flight at Yola Airport. Leading the probe, NSIB Director General Captain Alex Badeh Jr. and his team are set to meticulously examine the site where the near-tragedy unfolded.

On Sunday evening, Max Air’s flight NGL1649, a Boeing 737 with registration 5N-ADB, was cleared for takeoff from Yola to Abuja. However, moments before takeoff, the aircraft, carrying 119 passengers and six crew members, suffered a catastrophic failure as several of its tyres burst with a resounding bang during the takeoff roll.

The chaos did not end there. As the plane attempted to taxi off the runway, it lost its remaining two tyres, rendering it immobile and stranding passengers on the tarmac. Remarkably, no injuries were reported, but the incident left passengers and crew shaken.

One passenger, recounting the ordeal to TG News, described it as one of the most terrifying moments of their life, expressing immense relief that everyone escaped unharmed. “It was like a scene from a nightmare,” they said, highlighting the intense fear and uncertainty that gripped those on board.

According to an anonymous official from the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), swift action was taken to mitigate the situation. “We are coordinating the delivery of four replacement tyres from Abuja to Yola Airport to resolve the aircraft’s immobilization,” the official stated.

The investigation led by Captain Badeh aims to uncover the root cause of this alarming malfunction and ensure such incidents are prevented in the future. The aviation community and the public eagerly await the findings, hoping for reassurance and enhanced safety measures in Nigeria’s skies.

This incident underscores the critical importance of stringent safety protocols and thorough maintenance checks, reminding us all of the delicate balance between human ingenuity and the unpredictable forces of nature.
