Rescued from the Shadows: 58 Trafficked Nigerians Liberated in Ghana

In a significant breakthrough, at least 58 Nigerian women and children have been rescued from the clutches of human traffickers in Ghana. This rescue operation marks a substantial effort to combat human trafficking and brings the total number of Nigerians freed in Accra over the past three months to 105.

Callistus Elozieuwa, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Board of Trustees in Ghana, revealed these details during a meeting with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM). Dabiri-Erewa visited the victims at their safe location in Accra, expressing solidarity and support.

A statement released on Saturday by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NIDCOM’s Head of Media and Public Relations, provided a detailed breakdown of the rescued individuals: 47 from Kano, five from Katsina, two from Jigawa, and four from Kaduna. This recent rescue adds to an earlier operation where 11 girls were saved and placed under the care of NIDO.

The operation also led to the arrest of several suspected traffickers, who have been handed over to security agencies and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and prosecution.

Dabiri-Erewa praised the efforts of NIDO Ghana, the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, and Ghanaian law enforcement agencies for their crucial cooperation in this mission. She emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to protect vulnerable Nigerians abroad and bring perpetrators to justice.
