Truth or Consequences: The Need for Honest Leadership in Nigeria. By Philip Brandford

In the heart of Nigeria’s political landscape, a troubling narrative unfolds. Influential politicians within President Tinubu’s inner circle refuse to convey the harsh realities of the nation’s ailing economy. Their unwavering, self-serving support mirrors the infamous tale of Marie-Antoinette, who, in her grand delusion, suggested that the starving masses of France eat cake if bread was unaffordable. She failed to recognize that cake, being more luxurious than bread, was an even less attainable option. This tone-deafness led to the sweeping revolution that dismantled the French aristocracy.

Similarly, today’s Nigeria sees its citizens making drastic substitutions—cooking with watermelons instead of tomatoes—as they grapple with economic hardship. This grim adaptation underscores a deepening crisis, one that demands urgent and honest intervention.

It is not out of malice but profound concern that I draw these parallels. Nigeria, our beloved nation, teeters on the brink of economic and social collapse. Preventive measures are essential, and the need for transparent, truthful leadership has never been more critical. I earnestly pray that President Tinubu will recognize this perilous drift and take decisive action to steer Nigeria away from impending disaster.

The time to act is now. Nigeria’s survival depends on it.
