Nigerian Police Ban Shi’ite Procession in Kaduna for Ashura Day, Vow Swift Action Against Violators

In a decisive move, the Kaduna State Police Command has imposed a ban on all unauthorized gatherings by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shi’ites, including their anticipated Ashura procession. This action underscores the authorities’ commitment to maintaining public order and enforcing existing prohibitions on the proscribed group.

ASP Mansir Hassan, the police spokesperson for Kaduna, issued a stern statement on Sunday, clearly outlining the ban on illegal assemblies by IMN members. The government had earlier proscribed the IMN, and the police have reaffirmed their unwavering resolve to enforce this ban rigorously, thereby preventing any unauthorized processions or gatherings by the group.

“The command has banned every manner of illegal protest in the state,” the statement declared emphatically.

This announcement follows intelligence reports indicating that the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria was planning a procession to commemorate the 2024 Islamic Ashura day ceremony.

“It is an undeniable fact that the said ritual practice has, in recent years, been characterized by unimaginable violence leading to the destruction of properties, injuries to persons, and even loss of lives,” the statement read.

Given the historical backdrop of violence associated with these gatherings, the police command is unequivocally warning IMN members to abandon any plans for a procession.

The police command has issued a stern warning: decisive action will be taken against any individual or group, especially members of the proscribed IMN, who defy the ban on unlawful gatherings. Hassan emphasized that the full force of the law will be applied to anyone who violates the ban, signaling a robust commitment to preserving public safety and order.

This crackdown highlights the police’s vigilant stance and readiness to deploy necessary measures to uphold the law and prevent any disruptions to peace and security in Kaduna State.
