In a dramatic turn of events on Monday morning, the Nigerian police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, successfully apprehended Shuaibu Yushau, a man found perilously perched atop a radio mast in an apparent suicide attempt.
Reports surfaced early Monday that Yushau was spotted at the top of the mast, poised to end his life in the heart of Nigeria’s capital. A video capturing the tense scene circulated widely, alongside a suicide note discovered at the site.
Authorities quickly sprang into action, deploying a coordinated rescue effort involving the Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency, and Federal Capital Territory officials. Their combined expertise ensured Yushau’s safety.
By Monday evening, Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT command, confirmed in a statement that Yushau was in police custody and in stable condition. “Following a distress call from concerned citizens about a young man who climbed a very high mast with a placard at ASO Radio in Katampe at about 09:10 am, operatives of the FCT Police Command swiftly mobilized to the location,” she detailed.
“Through professional persuasion, the man, later identified as Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau, was prevented from taking his own life. He admitted to having observed the mast for about a week before deciding to climb it. The suspect is currently in police custody and stable condition,” Adeh added.
Further developments regarding this incident will be communicated in due course.
