Governor Fintiri Advocates for Local Government Autonomy Through Constitutional Means. By Philip B. Adams

Adamawa State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiris reaffirmed his commitment to local government autonomy, emphasizing that such reforms must be achieved through constitutional processes. In a recent statement on his official X handle (formerly Twitter).

Governor Fintiri highlighted the necessity of appropriate constitutional amendments, backed by the endorsement of two-thirds of the State Houses of Assembly.
As a vocal proponent of true federalism, the governor called for Constitutional Amendments, and he underscored the importance of local government autonomy in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic framework. He stressed that any move towards granting autonomy must align with constitutional provisions to ensure legality and sustainability.
“We must pursue local government autonomy through appropriate constitutional means. This includes necessary amendments that must be supported by two-thirds of the State Houses of Assembly,” Governor Fintiri stated. “Only through this process can we ensure that such autonomy is both legitimate and enduring.”
As an advocate of true federalism, Governor Fintiri believes that empowering local governments with full autonomy is crucial for grassroots development and efficient governance. He argues that local governments, being the closest tier to the people, should have the independence to manage their affairs and resources effectively.
“Local governments should have full autonomy to operate independently, make decisions, and utilize resources for the benefit of their communities,” he added. “This is a fundamental aspect of true federalism, which I strongly support.”
Governor Fintiri’s stance highlights the ongoing debate about federalism and local governance in Nigeria. His call for a constitutionally-backed approach to local government autonomy aims to create a more equitable and functional governance system that can address the needs of all Nigerians.
By and large, as the clamor for the local government autonomy is becoming more intense across the country, Governor Fintiri’s advocacy for local government autonomy through constitutional means reflects his commitment to true federalism and democratic principles. As the discussion progresses, the emphasis on constitutional processes ensures that any reforms will be both legally sound and widely accepted, paving the way for a more robust local governance structure in Nigeria.
