Election Petition Tribunal Sacks Plateau House Of Assembly Speaker, Sule

The Speaker of Plateau State House of Assembly, Moses Sule, has been sacked by the election petition tribunal sitting in Jos, the State capital.

The tribunal nullified the election of the speaker, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alongside Danjuma Azi, member representing Jos North constituency in the Assembly. In its decision, the tribunal declared the former majority leader of the house, Naanlong Daniel and Mark Na’ah, all of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winners of the March 18 election.

Daniel and Na’ah had challenged the sponsorship of Sule and Azi on the grounds that the PDP was not qualified to field any candidate in the election for lack of party structure.

Deciding on the matter, the tribunal led by Muhammad Tukur affirmed the position if the petitioners saying, “PDP was not qualified to sponsor the respondents for the election.”

He noted, “Since the party did not have structure, nothing can stand on nothing.”

Justice Tukur ruled that the PDP disobeyed the order of Justice S P Gang of Plateau State High Court delivered on November 26, 2020 which ordered the party to conduct ward congresses.

He held that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to present any authentic document that showed there was repeated congress by the party in 2021, as claimed by the respondents. The tribunal had sacked two PDP lawmakers of the state assembly, on Thursday but it upheld the election of Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
