PDP’s Ticket: Can Atiku Defeat Southerners Again Just As He Did On Zoning System?

The fact that the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have allowed all interested aspirants of the opposition party to contest serves as an indication that Atiku Abubakar is still powerful among other politicians in the southern part of the country. Nobody thought of the fact that Atiku Abubakar would be able to participate in the electioneering processes of the opposition party from the onset.

This looked impossible because of the zoning. Atiku Abubakar was the flag bearer of the party in the last election.

People did not really include him in the political analysis.The southerners also made attempts to stop Atiku Abubakar and other northerners from contesting the upcoming presidential election. All governors in the southern part of the country came together in Lagos to agree on producing the next president of the country. They asked the northerners to respect the zoning system because it has been used by the previous selections of the party before.

When the northerners got this request, they instantaneously rejected it.The northern politicians proposed a new way out for the party. They explained that it will be disastrous for the members of the party to keep on considering the zoning system at a delicate time. Atiku Abubakar also advised the party that it should make use of a candidate that will be able to tackle the strength of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He stated that where the presidential candidate of the party may come from does not matter but the victory of the party does.The southerners did not listen to this as they went ahead with the zoning system at the national convention of the party. The former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was from the southern part of the country. They had to zone it to the northern region this time around and Iyorchia Ayu emerged as the consensus candidate of the party.

The southern governors thought that since the zoning system was used at the national convention it is also going to be used to select the presidential candidate of the party.Surprisingly, the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have eradicated the zoning system of the party and the candidate of the party can come from any region of the country. Atiku Abubakar was the one who campaigned against the zoning system and he finally triumphed. The question now is whether Atiku Abubakar will be able able to defeat Obi, Wike, Fayose and other southern candidates to get the party’s ticket ahead of the upcoming presidential election
