The race for who will become the next national chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has taken another twist as reports claim President Muhammadu Buhari has rejected the plea of the Governors elected on the platform of the party to reject Senator Abdullahi Adamu. Senator Adamu has been reportedly chosen as the consensus candidate to be the next APC chairman by the President.According to the Vanguard, attempt by APC Governors to make the president change his mind on the choice of Adamu was turned down by the president.

Prior to the speculations surrounding Adamu, speculations have been rife that the race for the next national chairman will be between Senator Sani Musa and former Nasarawa state Governor, Tanko Al-Makura. However, the choice of Adamu, a serving Senator representing Nasarawa West by the president may have altered whatever plans the Governors had.The Governors were reported to have been rattled by the president’s insistence on Adamu and are planning on their next step.

The Governors will most likely deliberate among themselves and decide whether to support the president’s choice or not.
In my opinion, it is highly unlikely that the APC Governors will tow the path of their PDP counterparts in choosing their next national chairman.Recall that the PDP Governors worked against the influence of prominent party stakeholders like former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, former Senate president, Bukola Saraki and former Jigawa state Governor, Sule Lamido in electing their National Working Committee (NWC) members. They worked together to ensure the national chairman and every consensus candidate they backed for other positions got elected among the NWC.However, the APC Governors will likely not tow this path in my opinion. They will likely reach a compromise with the president about his choice of national chairman to avoid crisis in the party.
